Editorial

We lived simply but well at OCS. For most of us, the past eleven months were the most exciting time ever experienced. We had opportunities thrust on us to do things imaginable only in the wildest of dreams. For others, this institution was a den of iniquity where civility was a word, Greek or Chinese, to most inhabitants.

Be it a scene of excitement or a den of iniquity, OCS was undeniably a landmark signalling a turning-point in our lives. Let this Journal be a photocopy of this landmark faithfully recording objects, events, phenomena and personalities which should not be forgotten.

The journal divides itself into four major parts.

Part One, The Enemy, depicts that funny crowd of people called the DS who by their conduct, their hidden strength and weakness, their profound knowledge and self-professed ignorance have force-fed us for the duration of our training.

Part Two, Dramatis Personae, features the stars of the show: the ninety-two individuals who have weathered through the confusion and harassment of the junior term, and mastered the self-doubt and burdens of responsibility of the senior term to attain the coveted distinction of being the future leaders of men.

Part Three, Pearls of Wisdom, presents the tender, sentimental moments, ephemeral as they were, in the rough and tough existence of ours at OCS. It also records the occasional sparks of wisdom and wit and cynicism born of failures and frustration. These articles testify to the fact that this special breed of men mistakenly classified as military morons does have a soft side to their character, and an inquisitive mind in perpetual motion.

Part Four, Historic Events, chronicles the triumphs and tribulations in the life of an officer cadet : the victories and defeats in sports, the sweat and tears shed on the training ground, the days and nights of wine and roses ... and many other events which helped make living at OCS such a colourful affair.
